Morguhn Sheridan

“The point is, not how long you live, but how nobly you live."
Seneca the Younger

Morguhn Sheridan Morguhn Sheridan succumbed on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 8:58pm to injuries sustained from a fall from his roof on Sunday September 21, 2008. He is survived by his Ladies, Duchess Rowan de al Garnison and Duchess Meirwen uerch Owein, other mundane family members, numerous Squires, Men-at-Arms, Cadets, pages, household members and all those whose life was touched by him.

Morguhn served the Society with his every fiber and was an example to all who knew and met him. He was always seen helping, schlepping and washing when he was not retaining, guarding, fighting or fencing. And in recent years it seemed that if he was not sitting the throne, he was standing behind it as either Queen's Rapier Champion or King's Heavy Weapon's Champion. Even in the end he served, having given all he could to the world, down to the marrow of his bones.

His SCA Peer Card had the following biography for him:

“Morguhn Sheridan has sat a throne a total of 7 times in 2 kingdoms with 3 different ladies--in short, he is skilled in higher math. When asked once why he wore favors from more than one lady he replied, “A good man needs only one lady to carry him to the heights--those of us less gifted require more inspiration to achieve anything at all.” While he has a number of awards (including an AoA where he was noted more for doing the dishes than for fighting), his knighting by Gavin II and Sedalia II at Pennsic XVII, his Jewel of Æthelmearc from James I and Elina I, and his Keystone from Andrew and Alexandra mean the most to him.”

I am honored to have been able to call myself his student, his cadet, his squire and then in August, when elevated to the Order of the Pelican, his fellow Peer. He was my Duke, my Knight, my Don, my Pelican, my teacher. But above all else, he was my friend. He taught me more about doing what needs to be done, because it needs to be done, than anyone else I know. You do not just sit back and think “oh someone else will get up and go wash dishes. Someone will set up the list field. Someone will think to do that.” Because, you know what… you are someone. He taught me the hardest lesson of all… if you can’t be noticed and acknowledged for your actions in your own right, what makes you think a bit of regalia will make their notice valid? It will be a false honor. Strength comes from perseverance and continuing to do what you do and what you know needs to be done. Fighting your own fights does not make you weak. But at the same time, there is no shame in calling on resources when you have them.

I learned from him that you do what needs to be done, and if you believe that what you did is right, do not be ashamed of it, but be prepared for any consequences that come and give fair warning so those that may have to handle the fall out are adequately prepared. He often heard me say “Sir, I’m not sorry but… ”

And from him I learned one phrase to be proud of… “I am Ekaterina Volkova and all that that entails.” Words cannot convey the loss I, my household siblings, his Ladies and the rest of the Known World feel at his passing. I mourn the loss of my dear friend and hope that one day I can be even 1/10 of the Peer Morguhn Sheridan was.
